                   The Territory that comprises the municipality of Valencia was formerly part of Malaybalay. The earliest inhabitants of the area are Bukidnon natives who found a settlement along the banks of the Pulangi river and the confluence of the Panglibatuhan river.

             They were led by Datu Sebastian Manangkila. . Leon Galoport who came from Valencia Bohol opened the first school in 1911. When it was separated as a new municipality, the settlers agreed to name it " Valencia" in honor of Mr. Leon Galoport's Hometown.With rich natural resources, Christian settlers from all over the country were attracted. The Migrations started in the mid 1930's and increased by 22% after the World War II.The father of Valencia was the late Teodoro N. Pepito, the first mayor who spearheaded the petition to convert Valencia into a municipality.
         
         By virtue of E.O. #360 issued by the President Carlos P. Garcia, Valencia was officially born on January 16, 1961.Valencia is located at the heart of Mindanao, approximately 118 kms. East - South of Cagayan de Oro City. It is the fulcrum of a rising economic corridor connecting Cagayan de Oro through Bukidnon, Davao City and Iligan City. It is 69 km from Cagayan de Oro City and 234 kms from Cotabato City.
        
        Valencia, which is 373 meters above sea level, is characterized as generally wet throughout the year with a short dry spell within the months of December to April except January, which is sometimes a rainy month. It enjoys a good climate year round. It is also outside the typhoon belt. For the year 1995 to 1999, the total income of Valencia steadily increased from P46, 115,782.00 to P85, 757,789.06 with an average annual increase of 18% over a four-year period.With 17 banks, 34 lending house, 1 shopping mall, 20 appliance centers, 10 jewelry shops, 2 major pharmacies and a steadily increasing number of investors and real estate developers, with highly motivated officials and employees, and an increasing revenue, Valencia is now ripe to become a city.
          
         The phenomenal growth of Valencia is attributed to its agricultural economy, with fertile plains bordering the Pulangi River, out of which 13,941 hectares from the yellow corn variety. Sugarcane is another major crop that spurs the municipality's economic growth. Now even the municipality's vast hill and rugged areas, which used to be non-productive covering 5,925 hectares are now planted with sugarcane.Valencia has a full potential of becoming a tourist destination considering the rich natural resources, which abound in its 31 barangays. Its waterfalls, caves streams, springs and lakes and the mighty Pulangi River are all potential recreational area for water sports. Mountain guides are available all year round.
